HUBER HEIGHTS — It was the tale of two extremes when Wayne hosted Fairborn for a doubleheader Saturday.
The Lady Skyhawks won the first game 16-1 while Wayne came back to win the second game of the twin bill 10-3.
Marissa Norgrove pitched all 7 innings and gave up eight hits, issued one walk, allowed two earned runs and had four strikeouts.
“The first game I was a little hesitant,” Norgrove said. “It was early in the morning but in the second game I felt ready to go, felt good and my team backed me up and did a great job and our catcher called a good game. I threw a little harder with a little bit better movement, so it was a good game. My change-up is my best pitch so that is pretty much my go to whenever I get in a sticky situation.”
Leading hitters were Morgan Santos who went 4-4 with two runs and Ryleigh Crouse who went 3-3 with a walk and two RBI. Marissa Philpott went 2-3 with one run and three RBI. Breanna Musick went 1-3 with two runs. Sam Boyer went 1-3 with two RBI. Makaila Foy went 1-4 with one RBI. Kayla Eskew went 1-3 and scored one run. Kylee Brenenborg went 1-1 and Eve Geaslen got hit by a pitch and scored one run.
Wayne took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Morgan Santos reached on an infield hit and Marissa Philpott got on base via an error. Sam Boyer got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kali Brickman launched a sacrifice fly to center to score Santos. Ryleigh Crouse singled to center to drive-in Philpott and Boyer.
Fairborn got one run in the top of the 3rd inning when Wayne committed a pair of fielding errors and Taylor Rice singled.
In the home half of the third Eve Geaslen drew a walk, Crouse singled and Foy singled to drive-in Geaslen to give the Lady Warriors a 4-1 lead. Wayne added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on a double by Musick and singles by Santos and Philpott.
The Lady Skyhawks got two runs in the top of the 5th inning on back-to-back doubles by Kenzie Shaver and Hannah Borchert and a single by Chloe Becraft.
Wayne increased its lead to 10-3 in the bottom of the 6th inning. Kayla Eskew led off with a single to right center and Musick reached on a fielding error. Santos singled to left to load the bases and Philpott singled to center to score Eskew and Musick. Sam Boyer followed with another single to score Santos and Philpott to cap the scoring.
“The first game everything they hit dropped for them and we couldn’t make a play,” said Wayne Coach John Chesley. “Credit them. They hit the ball hard. Second game different story. We got the breaks and we got the hits so that was a great job by our players. It was a big day for us. We needed to get a split out of this. We couldn’t afford to go 0-2 to these guys. Marissa Norgrove threw a great game and kept them off balance and came back and pitched like she knows how.”
